Slow Down Premature Ageing With These Simple Tips: When The Sun Damages Your Skin

Summertime is finally here, we all have been waiting for those picnic and sunbathing days, beach vacations and pool parties. The common denominator of these beautiful outside activities? A bright sun, shining on us.

But do you know what incorrect exposure to the sun can cause? Read more and learn to identify possible signs of sun damage so to treat and avoid them in the future.

Did you know that many skin changes that were commonly believed to be due to ageing, such as easy bruising, are actually a result of prolonged and/or incorrect exposure to the sun? These few signs are all due to the harmful effects of UV (ultraviolet) light. In fact, up to 80 percent of visible ageing is caused by the sun. Not by ageing itself. Not by stress, lack of sleep. Those fine lines and age spots? They’re likely to be damage from the sun.

What signs of sun damage were you mistaking for skin ageing?

1. Skin texture changes

If you feel like your skin-care routine isn’t complete without a form of retinol-based product to treat skin texture, we definitely recommend implementing a very high form of sun protection into your daily routine.
In fact, thick or thin skin, coarse wrinkles, fine wrinkles, easy bruising, and skin tearing, are all signs that your skin needs more protection from UV (both UVB and UVA) light.

2. Noticeable blood vessels

The sun can cause micro-bruising and minor trauma to the skin of exposed areas leading to the appearance of tiny blood vessels (telangiectasias) in the skin, especially on the face.

3. Brown spots

The most noticeable sun-induced pigment change is brown spots or freckles. We all love the look that freckles give to our face in summer, going to the extent of recreating them with make-up if we are not getting this sun-damage sign naturally. When large freckles appear on the backs of the hands, chest, shoulders, arms, and upper back, they are called “age spots”  or “liver spots”.

They are usually seen in sun-exposed areas since their formation is stimulated by the sun. Most moles are normal; however, if you get larger and more irregular moles in non-exposed areas of your skin, this is an indicator you may be prone to developing melanoma, a type of skin cancer. Always have these types of moles monitored, whether they change in size, shape or colour, and don’t hesitate to have them checked by a dermatologist.

The main take-away that we would like to point out is that all those retinol-based creams, and collagen serums and brightening masks are null and void if you don’t protect your skin from the sun using good quality SPF all year-round.

Skin-care ingredients that you should reconsider for your a.m. routine.

Vitamin A derivatives (retinol, tretinoin, isotretinoin) and AHAs (glycolic acid, lactic acid, mandelic acid) do increase your sun sensitivity even if you apply very high spf as a last protective layer. We recommend you use them in your p.m. skin-care routine. Naturalia Sintesi uses vitamin A in Melaut Intens’ formulation and glycolic acid in Anti Aging Complex’ formula. Use them together in your nightly skin-care routine to get a brighter and smoother skin in the morning.

On the other hand, Vitamin C, azelaic acid, and beta hydroxy acids (salicylic acid) don’t increase your sensitivity to the sun. They do work by exfoliating your skin, which means you will have one less protective layer. This is why we recommend applying sunscreen every day (actually multiple times per day) regardless of your skin-care products’ main ingredients. Naturalia Sintesi’s new product, Regeneration Serum, contains vitamin C, which helps brighten and regenerate your skin.
